Part I The Brochure

1.) Step One:
Pick a Marsupial to learn about
  • Bandicoot
  • Greater Glider
  • Sugar Glider
  • Squirrel Glider
  • Red Kangaroo
  • Gray Kangaroo
  • Koala
  • Opossum
  • Tasmanian Devil
  • Wallaby
  • Wombat

2.) Step Two: Questions Someone might have about your marsupial.
(You will need to write and answer these questions on a piece of paper which you will later use for your brochure)
  • What is a marsupial? How are they different from other animals? Are they Mammals, birds, reptiles, or fish?
  • How big does this animal get to be? (How tall and how heavy)
  • What does this animal eat?
  • Where does it live? (country/part of the world)
  • What is its habitat like?
  • What makes your animal special or different from other animals?
  • How does your animal get around? (does it jump, fly, swim, or walk?)
  • Can you tell us any information about how your animal was discovered?
  • Are are there any predators of this animal?
  • What is the scientific name of your animal?

3.) Step Three: Making Your Brochure!
  • Make a layout of your brochure as a rough draft. (you don't need to put in all of your information, just tell say where u want your information to go). Use two pages, one for the front and one for the back.
  • Be sure to fill your brochure with pictures of your marsupial and interesting facts! Some of the questions you just answered are a good place to start. Your brochure should have paragraphs about your animal as well as a map of where we can find it.
  • Below is a sample of what your layout should look like.
After you have finished making your layout it is time to start making your real brochure!
  • Start with a sheet of construction paper
  • Fold it into three equal sections like this:

  • Now you are ready to start putting on the pictures and writing in your information!
    (Be sure to write very neat and clear)
Your brochure should include the fallowing:
  • A cover page (Animal name, Name, Date, Teahcer's name, and a picture)
  • A page describing what a marsupial is (Must be 4 to 5 sentences)
  • Facts page (Include interesting fasts about your animal, at least 5 facts)
  • Map page (a map of where your animal lives and a short paragraph about this place)
  • Draw a picture of your animal, and include information about this animal
  • Quiz page (We need to make sure our guests at the zoo are paying attention, make at least five (5) questions about your animal that someone could learn by reading your brochure)
  • Your brochure should contain at least 5 pictures of your animal (this includes your hand drawn animal)


Part II
The Explorer's Journal

It is now time to start writing in you Explorer's Journal. This is the part where you get to do some creative writing about your marsupial. It should be a fun and exciting story about how the first explorers found your marsupial. It is an imaginative story meaning you get to make it into an adventure that twists however you want!
Your paper should...

  • Be fun, and adventurous
  • Have correct spelling and grammar
  • Be one to two full pages long
Step One: Think of ideas for your adventure and write them down
Step Two: Write a rough draft and turn it in to your teacher
Step Three: Look at the corrections your teacher has made for you and change them
Step Four: It is time to type your final copy! (should be at least one full page long)

*Be sure to put your name and date at the top*


Part III Create your own Marsupial

Step One: Think about what makes an animal a marsupial
Step Two: Draw a picture of your imaginary marsupial
Step Three: Write down any special qualities of this marsupial as well as making up interesting facts
Step Four: Name your marsupial
Step Five: Now it is time to make a colorful picture of your marsupial, there are many ways to make a colorful picture such as...
  • A water color painting
  • Paper cut outs with colored paper
  • Colored Pencils
  • Markers
*Be sure to include your new animal name on your picture*

Step Six: Type a short page telling about the interesting fact about your animal (at least 5 sentences)


Now we are finished! Hooray!
